Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) can provide longterm energy storage at a relatively low cost and co-benefits in the form of freshwater storage capacity. IRENA's global roadmap calls for a two-thirds increase in hydropower installed capacity, to 2 147 GW, by 2050. In other words, around 850 GW of new installed capacity is required in the next 30 years. Hydropower projects can directly support the achievement of SDGs 6, 7, 9 and 13.
