The Cyient Foundation launched a Digital Library initiative today at the Akshara Vidyalaya School in Nellore with the aim of helping underprivileged students gain access to repositories of high-quality educational resources. The launch coincides with the 14th anniversary of the Swarna Bharat Trust, a Chennai-based non-profit organization, which runs the school. The digital library is equipped with e-learning tools to help students with their classwork, and provides educational material in a number of interesting formats.
The key resources provided by the Digital Library initiative include the following:
Mr. BVR Mohan Reddy, Founder and Trustee, Cyient Foundation said, "As the world is transforming into the digital age, most information is now available in digital formats. Digital formats are enabling democratization of information which India needs to embrace. Such technologies can benefit and uplift the bottom of the pyramid by providing access to information resources and repositories irrespective of users' status or location. Prime Minister Modi has voiced his vision of digitally empowered India in multiple forums. Cyient Foundation has been running multiple corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities in the education sector and has come forward to establish the first digital library of its kind. This digital library has been named after an outstanding former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, who held education and children very close to his heart. The library will benefit more than 900 students of Akshara Vidyalaya in Saraswati Nagar, Venkatachalam Mandal, Nellore District, where most of the students come from nearby rural villages. We are delighted that Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Digital Library is being inaugurated by Hon. HRD Minister Smt. Smriti Irani in the presence of Hon. Minister for Urban Development Mr. Venkiayya Naidu ".
Addressing the educational needs of underprivileged children primarily in government schools is a key focus area of the Cyient Foundation, which is the CSR arm of Cyient Limited. The Foundation has adopted 13 government schools to date, supporting over 8500 students from pre-primary to high school. The goal is to make these schools preferred places to learn. Cyient Foundation provides necessary infrastructure, such as labs, library, teaching aids, and teaching staff to increase student enrollment, attendance, retention, and course completion rate.
Since its inception almost 15 years ago, the Cyient Foundation has conceptualized and enabled various social initiatives, including the adoption of government schools. In June 2015, the Foundation introduced the Swachh Telangana-Swachh Pathashala campaign (aligned with the Swachh Bharat program) to provide water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in 54 government schools, impacting more than 18,000 students in Lingampally Mandal in Ranga Reddy District, Telangana.
