The company is the principal sponsor of a three-day Friendly Football Tournament that was kicked-off in Hyderabad today

Hyderabad, India, June 20, 2018: Cyient Limited, a global provider of engineering, manufacturing, geospatial, networks, and operations management services, has joined hands with UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) to mark the World Refugee Day on June 20, by sponsoring a Friendly Football Tournament for the refugees in Hyderabad through the Cyient Foundation, its CSR arm. The UNHCR is conducting this tournament to raise awareness and build support for refugees and forcibly displaced communities. The tournament, supported by the Telangana Football Association and UNHCR partner NGOs, COVA and Save the Children, was inaugurated today.

June 20 is observed as the World Refugee Day to commemorate the strength, courage, and perseverance of millions of refugees world over who are forced to leave their land of origin. The UNHCR has launched a #WithRefugees campaign to bring the public together and show solidarity for displaced and stateless people. The football tournament, organized at the Quli Qutub Shah stadium in the city, will see participation from 16 teams. The teams from corporates, colleges, and local football clubs will play with teams formed by refugees from different countries. Five matches will be played every day from 07:00 hrs – 18:00 hrs.

Cyient spearheads its corporate social responsibility initiatives through the Cyient Foundation. Since its inception almost two decades ago, the Foundation has conceptualized and enabled multiple social initiatives, supporting the cause of education, sanitation, digital literacy, skill development, and disaster relief assistance.

The UNHCR works with the Government of India to protect and assist refugees and asylum-seekers. Historically, India has welcomed those seeking protection from persecution. The Government of India directly assists about 169,000 Sri Lankan Tamils and Tibetans. Along with this, there are around 38,000 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with the UN refugee agency, belonging to different countries such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, Somalia, Iran, Iraq and living across different locations in India. Of these, approximately 6,000 refugees and asylum-seekers are based in Hyderabad.
