Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, February 10, 2015 - Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's largest utility, and Cyient Ltd., a leading solution provider specializing in network operations, and involved in key Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)/Meter Data Management System deployments worldwide, announced their collaboration today by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for joint research on smart grid technologies.

The MoU was signed by Dato Prof. Ir. Dr. Ibrahim bin Hussein, Acting Vice Chancellor, UNITEN and Mr. Sanjay Krishnaa, Senior Vice President and APAC Head of Cyient Ltd. The intended goal of this MoU is to develop and maintain an ongoing relationship between the organizations while benefiting from each other's strengths in the area of smart grids. Both parties have agreed to undertake the following activities during the term of this MoU:

  • Study the feasibility of deploying Cyient's framework for improving operations.
  • Contribute to integrating diverse technologies in the areas of communications, electronics and utility systems such as Distribution Management System, Master Data Management, Outside Management System, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and Geographical Information System (GIS).

As a region, South-East Asia has the highest projected GDP growth rates and is a rising smart grid market that offers substantial consumer benefits and vendor opportunities. By 2025, Southeast Asian countries will likely have an electricity demand profile similar to Latin American and Eastern European countries.

Cyient has been an industry leader for the past 20 years and has played a crucial role in helping utilities realize their smart grid vision. Cyient is a major system integrator in South-East Asia region, and has implemented AMI and smart grid projects and is working with UNITEN to recommend a framework to improve their operations. Over the past few years, Cyient has worked with TNB in rolling out its enterprise GIS and AMI pilot projects for Melaka and Putrajaya.

"This collaboration is a major milestone for Cyient and UNITEN in taking our relationship to the next level. We are looking forward to a long-term collaboration with UNITEN in creating smarter, cleaner electricity systems," said Mr. Sanjay Krishnaa, Senior Vice President and APAC Head of Cyient Ltd.

"We are happy to collaborate with Cyient to leverage their smart grid expertise and implementation experience for the growing smart grid market in South-East Asia. UNITEN, being an integral part of TNB, is distinctively positioned to progress in the rapid evolution of the smart grid market," said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Hang See, Deputy Dean, Research & Postgraduate Studies for College of Engineering, UNITEN and key initiator of this project.
