Delivering reliable, scalable onsite power for hyperscale data centers

As hyperscale data centers expand in Ireland, operators are increasingly turning to onsite power generation to ensure reliability and operational control. For AVK, a developer and operator of power plants supporting hyperscale facilities, this meant deploying Wärtsilä engine technology within sites defined by fixed permitting conditions, tight footprints, and demanding delivery schedules.

While Wärtsilä supplied the engine technology, a fully functioning power plant requires the integration of multiple supporting systems around that core equipment. Cyient was engaged by AVK to deliver theBalance of Plant (BoP) engineering, designing and coordinating the process, mechanical, electrical, structural, and utility systems necessary to enable safe and reliable operation.

The delivery model was structured around clear roles. Wärtsilä focused on engine supply and performance. Cyient concentrated on the engineering and integration of systems surrounding the engines. This division allowed each organization to apply its core expertise while maintaining alignment with AVK’s overall program requirements.

Cyient mobilized a large team of experienced engineers to support a fast-paced data center program. Working within fixed building envelopes and site constraints, the team developed master plant layouts, defined process system interconnections, and engineered piping systems with appropriate routing and structural supports. Electrical and safety systems, including earthing and lightning protection, were designed to meet regulatory and operational standards. Mechanical utilities, HVAC systems, and domestic water infrastructure were integrated into the overall plant configuration.

Particular attention was given to long-term operability and maintainability. Plant replacement strategies and maintenance access were incorporated into the layout from the outset. Procurement documentation and installation packages were developed to support construction, while BIM-enabled coordination improved multidisciplinary alignment and reduced clashes.

The solution was developed with Wärtsilä engines at its core, with the BoP design showcasing Cyient’s flexibility to support diverse OEM requirements. This allows the same engineering approach to be applied across different engine or turbine suppliers and future sites, supporting scalability across AVK’s broader portfolio.

Through this approach, AVK, Wärtsilä, and Cyient established a practical and repeatable delivery model for mission-critical data center power, aligned with hyperscale timelines, constrained sites, and the operational demands of continuous power generation.
