Rewiring the World with GIS: Reflections from Esri UC 2025

Written by 30 Jul, 2025

The Esri User Conference 2025 was more than an event—it was a clear signal of where the geospatial industry is headed. With over 17,000 in-person attendees and more than 20,000 virtual participants from *167 countries **, the week in San Diego delivered both perspective and purpose. It was about understanding how GIS helps organizations work smarter, plan better, and respond faster.

Jack Dangermond, President of Esri, in his keynote, emphasized the transformative role of GIS as a unifying platform to “Integrate Everything, Everywhere.” He showcased how GeoAI, reality mapping, 3D visualization, drone and video mapping, real-time GIS, and advanced image processing are reshaping industries. His keynote focused on leveraging GIS to tackle global challenges like climate change, sustainability, and urbanization while fostering collaboration and innovation. The message was clear: GIS is no longer just about maps—it is about creating a more connected, resilient, and sustainable world.

Great work from users in different areas were highlighted and organization recognized for their remarkable work through Special Achievement Awards.

Learning from Conversations That Mattered

Cyient was honored to be invited to the Esri Business Leadership Summit, an exclusive forum for Esri’s top global partners and strategic industry leaders. This summit offered direct insights into Esri’s vision, roadmap, and collaborative strategies for advancing GIS adoption across the commercial sector.

We also actively participated in a series of specialized summits that provided deep dives into emerging technologies and domain-specific applications:

  • GIS Managers Summit: Best practices for deploying and managing enterprise GIS on a scale.
  • AI Summit: Focused on the integration of AI with GIS to deliver predictive insights and automation, with strong emphasis on GeoAI (Generative and Agentic).
  • Spatial Analytics Summit: Advanced techniques for extracting operational intelligence from location data.
  • Image Processing Summit: Cutting-edge methods for converting remote sensing and imagery data into actionable intelligence through AI-powered tools.

These sessions deepened our perspective and validated Cyient’s strategic investments in these rapidly growing areas—aligning with Esri’s technology priorities.

Insights in the Spotlight: Cyient’s Map Gallery Entry

Our Digital Twin framework for utilities, showcased in the Map Gallery, attracted strong interest from attendees. The solution integrates platforms such as Esri ArcGIS, Cloudworx, ServiceNow, and Network Vision into a unified, outcome-driven ecosystem. It demonstrated how utilities can migrate legacy network data to the Esri Utility Network (UN) using Cyient’s proprietary UN Bridge software and create advanced digital models of utility assets.

This framework supports real-time 3D monitoring, outage simulation, AI-driven predictive maintenance, and advanced analytics for improved network visibility and faster decision-making. It is structured across five levels of digital twin maturity—Digital Data Twin, Component Twin, Asset Twin, System Twin, and Operational Twin—enabling utilities to progress from simple data digitization to full operational intelligence. Key capabilities include IoT sensor integration, 3D asset modeling, outage planning tied to customer impact, and automated work order generation. The outcomes are clear: reduced downtime, improved reliability, and enhanced customer satisfaction. With the digital twin market projected to reach $29 billion by 2025, scalable and spatially enabled solutions like these are becoming increasingly critical.

The Undercurrent Around GeoAI

While many technologies were featured at UC 2025, AI was the common thread in almost every conversation. ArcGIS is evolving into a true Geospatial AI platform, combining spatial data with advanced AI to deliver smarter, faster, and more automated insights.

Esri’s AI Framework unites GIS tools and data, advanced AI models, and large language models (LLMs) to power AI Assistants, AI Agents, and intelligent workflows. This approach is turning GIS from a system of record into a dynamic, intelligent ecosystem—one that improves productivity, accelerates decision-making, and pushes scientific advancements forward through GeoAI.

Takeaways That Will Stick

One of the most appreciated aspects of Esri UC 2025 was how practical and grounded it felt. The excitement wasn’t just about shiny new features; it came from real-world use cases and honest questions:

  • How do we make data work harder, not just look better?
  • How do we connect spatial tools with enterprise systems?
  • How do we turn insights from maps into real-world action?

This shift—from focusing purely on information to emphasize integration and impact—was present in every session and conversation.

The closing session brought the focus back to the community. Esri leadership shared attendee feedback on improving both in-person and digital experiences. A quote from historian Howard Zinn resonated deeply:

“We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”

That idea perfectly captures the spirit of GIS: every data point, every map layer, every spatial insight contributes to something greater—whether it’s responding to crises, managing a city, or maintaining critical infrastructure.

Looking Ahead

The biggest takeaway from Esri UC 2025 wasn’t a single tool or technology—it was direction. GIS is moving closer to the core of AI-driven enterprise decision-making, shifting from being a support tool to becoming an integral part of how organizations operate and grow.

At Cyient, we return with fresh ideas, stronger alignment, and confidence that our approach is on the right path—leveraging spatial intelligence to deliver better planning, smarter operations, and measurable impact.
